DETROIT (97. The Ticket) -- It was a long year for many Lions fans without setting up shot for a Sunday morning tailgate at Eastern Market, a years-long tradition on game days in Detroit.
It looks like fans will have to wait another year, as the Eastern Market Partnership announced Wednesday it has canceled all tailgating for 2021-22 Lions game at Eastern Market, citing a staff shortage.
“At this time, Eastern Market Partnership does not have the staff capacity to host large-scale tailgating crowds,” a post on Facebook said.
Officials say parking lots will not be available on game days and authorities will enforce parking bans during home games.
“We love the energy that Detroit Lions fans bring to the market but with our current resources, we can’t provide the experience that fans expect. We look forward to serving our tailgating crowds again in 2022,” officials said.
The decision comes as a disappointment to many fans as the team announced a return to full capacity at Ford Field for the upcoming season, after attendance was limited to friends and family last season.
The Lions said they're "bummed" about the decision, but offered several other options in a Twitter post Wednesday afternoon.
Alternative parking and tailgating locations can be found at fordfield.com/parking. Information about pregame festivities at Ford Field is available at detroitlions.com/game-day/power-hour.
The Lions kick off the preseason at home against the Buffalo Bills next Friday, Aug. 13. The regular season begins on Sept. 12 against the San Francisco 49ers.
