With Myles Garrett wanting out of Cleveland, a trade proposal for the Lions:
Detroit trades, per Lions Wire, its first- and third-round picks this year, its first- and third-round picks next year and defensive tackle Brodric Martin, and receives Garrett, a fifth-rounder this year and a second-rounder next year.
Valenti says he's doing the deal: "You’re getting a second-round pick, you’re getting the fifth back that you gave for Za’Darius (Smith), you’re getting Myles Garrett, I’m doing it. Is it a lot? Of course it is. But I’d do that deal -- all day."
The Lions would really just be sacrificing their next two first-round picks. As part of the NFL's reward for developing minority coaches into head coaches, the Lions have an extra third-round pick in each of the next two drafts as a result of the Jets hiring Aaron Glenn.
The trade, says Valenti, is essentially "two first-round picks, plus Aaron Glenn and the dead body of Brodric Martin, for Garrett, a fifth and a second." The scenario also calls for the Lions give Garrett a new four-year $144.5 million deal.
"If you keep Za’Darius Smith and acquire Myles Garrett, you could bring back Marcus Davenport on a one-year, prove-it deal, and with your second-round pick this year, since you’re trading your first, take a D-tackle. You’re sitting with $45 million in cap space. The cap’s going up from $255 million to a minimum of $277.
"We’re like Voltron. We’re doing the deal."
