Cade Cunningham reportedly out indefinitely, may need surgery

Cade Cunningham won't be back on the court anytime soon.

After missing the last five games due to shin soreness, the Pistons' second-year guard and former first overall pick is now out indefinitely and at risk of needing surgery, according to The Athletic.

The fear is that Cunningham has a stress fracture in his left shin, an issue that dates back to last season and reportedly flared up again in the offseason.

The hope is that with continued rest the injury will heal on its own. And that's still Cunningham's plan, at the moment. But if the pain and inflammation in his shin lingers, he may have no choice but to undergo surgery.

Either way, it's a big blow to the Pistons, who are 3-14 as it is. Cunningham was off to a strong start to his second season, one of just eight players in the NBA averaging at least 19 points, six rebounds and six assists.

The other seven are all coming off All-Star seasons, including past MVP's LeBron James, Nikola Jokic and Steph Curry.
