Pistons' coaching hire points toward Monty Williams' return

For now, it sounds like Monty Williams will remain the head coach of the Pistons. That's the impression left by a report Friday afternoon from Adrian Wojnarowski that the Pistons, under new president of basketball operations Trajan Langdon, are adding former Pelicans coach Fred Vinson to Williams' staff.

A well-regarded shooting coach, Vinson overlapped with Langdon for the past five years with the Pelicans, where he also coached under Williams from 2010-15. It was Williams who originally hired Vinson as a Pelicans assistant.

The Pistons have yet to say whether Williams will be back in Langdon's first year in charge. In fact, they've yet to even introduce Langdon himself. They did make the decision to part ways with former GM Troy Weaver, who, along with owner Tom Gores, hired Williams last offseason to a record-breaking six-year, $78.5 million contract.

Gores has left it to Langdon to decide if Williams returns, after things quickly went south. The Pistons lost 28 games in a row almost straight out of the gate en route to the worst season in franchise history. If Langdon wants to hire his own coach, Gores is reportedly willing to eat the rest of Williams' contract.

Friday's news would indicate otherwise, that Langdon is building a new staff under Williams rather than starting over at the top. But until Langdon and the Pistons make any kind of announcement themselves, nobody can say for sure.
