After the worst season in franchise history, the Pistons are considering major changes -- although it sounds like they'll be adding as much as subtracting.
Owner Tom Gores is thinking about hiring a president of basketball operations to either replace or work above Troy Weaver, whose four-year tenure as GM has produced four of the worst eight teams in franchise history. The president would have "the final say on all basketball matters," per The Athletic. It's a role the Pistons haven't had in the organization since the firing of Stan Van Gundy, who also served as head coach from 2014-18 while Jeff Bower served as GM.
As for the current head coach, it sounds like Monty Williams will be back after signing a record-breaking six-year, $78.5 million contract with the Pistons last offseason that made him the highest-paid coach in the NBA. Williams, whose contract can pay him as much as $100 million over eight years, will return for a second season "assuming he demonstrates that he can deliver significantly more progress in the development of the team and players," per The Athletic.
The Pistons' ultimate goal "is to have total synergy from the top down," whatever that means or looks like to Gores. They are 14-67 with one merciful game remaining, the third straight season in which they've regressed under Weaver. And their first season under Williams produced little long-term growth, underlined by the stunted development of Jaden Ivey.
For now, it sounds like Gores is sticking with at least one of his leaders, with another on the way.
