Pistons GM Troy Weaver raised some eyebrows last offseason by giving Mason Plumlee a three-year, $24.5 million deal.
Now Weaver's trading picks to unload him.
The Pistons are sending Plumlee and the No. 37 pick in Thursday night's draft to the Hornets in exchange for the No. 57 pick, according to Adrian Wojnarowski.
Assuming Charlotte picks up the rest of Plumlee's contract, the Pistons will save $8.1 million against the cap in 2021-22 and $8.5 million in 2022-23.
Plumlee, 31, averaged 10.4 points and 9.3 rebounds in 56 games last season. His departure should clear more playing time for All-Rookie center Isaiah Stewart.
It will also afford Weaver and the Pistons more flexibility in free agency, which begins Aug. 2.
The Pistons now own picks Nos. 42, 52 and 57 Thursday night, in addition to No. 1 overall.
