Steve Yzerman has added another low-cost veteran to the Red Wings' blue line.

The Red Wings have signed defenseman Travis Hamonic to a one-year, $1 million deal, the club announced Friday. Hamonic, who turns 35 on Saturday, played in 59 games for the Senators last season in a third-pair role. He had seven points and a minus-16 rating.

A defensive defenseman who skates well, Hamonic has played 900 games over 15 seasons in the NHL. He's 12th among active players in blocked shots and could be a boost to the Red Wings' penalty kill, which last season was one of the worst in NHL history. He's a right-hand shot, which Detroit needs more of on defense.

The Red Wings' blue line features Ben Chiarot, Simon Edvinsson, Albert Johansson and Erik Gustafsson on the left side and now Hamonic, Moritz Seider, Justin Holl and fellow newcomer Jacob Bernard-Docker on the right.

Hamonic spent the last four seasons in Ottawa after being acquired by the Senators from the Canucks at the 2022 trade deadline. He also spent three years with the Flames after making his name with the Islanders over the first seven years of his career.
