Red Wings make Svechnikov 'available for trade'

The NHL trade deadline is less than a week away, and the Red Wings have several veterans who could be on the move. Luke Glendening, Bobby Ryan, Darren Helm, Marc Staal and Jonathan Bernier lead the list.

Here's a younger name to watch: Evgeny Svechnikov.

The 2015 first-round pick has played well in limited opportunities this season, but still can't carve out a consistent spot in Detroit's lineup.

And now, according to Elliotte Friedman, Svechnikov "is available for trade."

It shouldn't come as a huge surprise. The Wings already risked losing Svechnikov twice this season by placing him on waivers, but he didn't have any takers.

Maybe that will change if they absorb some of his salary in a trade. He's a pending restricted free agent making $875,000.

Svechnikov, 24, has three goals and five points in 10 games this season, a positive step after injuries limited him to just four NHL games the two seasons prior.

But the Wings have a glut of young forwards in the pipeline and only so many spots on the roster -- and Svechnikov wasn't drafted by Steve Yzerman.

Elsewhere on the rumor front, Friedman says the Wings have been relatively quiet when it comes to their potential rentals. He's "not as convinced" about rumors connecting the Oilers with Glendening, but suggests "there will be interest elsewhere."

The trade deadline is 3 p.m. on April 12.
