Jake Walman nets thriller overtime winner on penalty shot as Wings overcome 3-1 deficit to beat Vancouver Canucks

DETROIT - For the first time in franchise history, the Detroit Red Wings won a game in overtime on a penalty shot goal inside a roaring Little Caesar's Arena on Saturday afternoon.

The Wings fought back from a 3-1 third period deficit against the league-leading Vancouver Canucks to beat them 4-3 in overtime.

Daniel Sprong scored his 14th goal with five seconds remaining on a power play while and Michael Rasmussen tipped the puck past Canucks goaltender Casey DeSmith on a blast from Jake Walman to tie the game at 7:51 in the third period.

Walman then netted the game winner just 23 seconds into overtime on a penalty shot.

Walman was awarded the penalty shot and scored after he was hooked by Quinn Hughes on a breakaway.

Wings left wing Lucas Raymond netted a goal in the first period before the Canucks answered with three goals of their own in the second period before the Wings came roaring back in the third.

Alex Lyon stopped 28 of 31 of Vancouver's shots to improve to to 14-6-2.

The Red Wings failed to capitalize in almost seven consecutive power play minutes, but managed to rally after a disasters second period.

With the win, Detroit improves to 27-18-6 (60 points).
