The Tigers have brought back a familiar face as they prepare to potentially trade some others.
The club signed a trio of relievers to minor league deals on Tuesday, including old friend Daniel Norris. He returns to the Tigers a year after being traded to the Brewers for pitching prospect Reese Olson.
Norris was released by the Cubs last week after fighting control issues for much of the season. He had a 6.90 ERA in 27 appearances, despite a batting average against of .207 and a career high strikeout rate. That will happen when you also post the highest walk rate (6.3 BB/9) in the National League.
We'll see if he can straighten himself out with his old team.
The Tigers also re-signed Jacob Barnes on Monday after releasing him in June. He had a 6.10 ERA in 22 appearances for Detroit. And they added fellow right-hander Chi Chi Gonzalez, who failed to catch on with the Twins and the Brewers earlier this season.
The additions come a week before the trade deadline, where the last-place Tigers are likely to subtract from one of the best bullpens in the bigs. All-Star closer Gregory Soto, Michael Fulmer, Andrew Chafin and Joe Jimenez are among the team's relievers who could be on the move.
