For the first time in Comerica Park history, the Tigers failed to sell out a playoff game.
They announced an attendance of 37,069 for Game 4 of the ALDS against the Mariners on Wednesday, in what was the 27th postseason game at Comerica Park.
The 3:08 start time obviously didn't help, but the Tigers have sold out plenty of afternoon, weekday playoff games in the past, including Game 3 of the ALDS last year that started at 3:08 on a Wednesday.
The Tigers' second-half swoon when they blew a 15.5-game lead over the Guardians in the AL Central and their dispiriting performance in an 8-4 loss in Game 3 Tuesday night likely had more to do with the light turnout Wednesday.
But those who showed up got their money's worth. The Tigers roared back from a 3-0 deficit and saved their season with three runs in the fifth and four in the sixth to turn a mausoleum into a madhouse.
After playing like one of the best teams in baseball in the first half of the year, the Tigers went 28-37 after the All-Star break, 9-22 down the stretch and lost 14 of their final 17 games.
Fan frustration seemed to boil over the past two games at home, with the Tigers' slumping offense hearing boos from the hometown crowd.
But none of that matters now. The Tigers head to Seattle for Game 5 with Tarik Skubal on the mound and a spot in the ALCS on the line.
