Justyn-Henry Malloy back with Tigers as Gleyber Torres hits injured list

Gleyber Torres hit his first home run as a Tiger in his second game with his new team, and strained his left oblique in the process.

The Tigers placed Torres on the 10-day injured list Monday, retroactive to last Saturday, meaning their starting second baseman will miss at least the next eight games. That's the bad news.

Good news is, Justyn-Henry Malloy is getting a well-deserved call-up from Toledo. The Tigers summoned Malloy to Seattle on Monday before the start of their three-game series with the Mariners.

Malloy, 25, hit well enough in spring training to make the Tigers' Opening Day roster, but was left out by the math when they suffered a series of injuries in the outfield that that forced them to keep Ryan Kreidler as their center fielder.

To no surprise, Malloy went 5-for-11 with a homer, three extra-base hits and two walks in the first three games of the season for Triple-A Toledo. Now he's back in the big leagues, where he debuted last season.

The Tigers will use Malloy as a designated hitter and corner outfielder, though he started at first in his three games with Toledo. With Torres sidelined, Detroit will likely shift Colt Keith back to second and slide Spencer Torkelson in at first after Torkelson's hot start to the season.
