Until further notice, the Tigers will be holding their breath.

A day after his second start of his second big-league season, Casey Mize has landed on the 10-day injured list with a right elbow strain, the Tigers announced prior to Friday night's game against the Royals.

While the extent of the injury isn't entirely clear -- Mize is likely headed for further testing and evaluation -- the elbow is always cause for concern when it comes to pitchers. And this is a pitcher the Tigers are counting on to play a major role in their rotation.

Mize didn't look hindered Thursday night when he held the Royals to two runs on six hits and two walks over five innings. He wasn't particularly efficient or dominant, but he had typical velocity on his fastball and used all five of his pitches.

Now on the IL, Mize will miss at least his next two starts, the first of which was slated to come next Wednesday against the Yankees. And the Tigers will cross their fingers and hope for the best.
