Penei Sewell will help the Tigers kick off baseball season in Detroit.
The Lions All-Pro right tackle is throwing out the ceremonial first pitch at Friday's home opener, where a capacity crowd at Comerica Park will watch the Tigers take on the Athletics. Standing-room-only tickets are still available for purchase.
Grace West, a Canton native and a finalist on last year's season of 'The Voice,' will perform the Opening Day National Anthem. First pitch is scheduled for 1:10 p.m.
Sewell, 23, has a tough act to follow. A quartet of Detroit sports legends delivered a ceremonial first pitch on Opening Day last year, with Hall of Famers Calvin Johnson, Ben Wallace and Nicklas Lidstrom joined by Miguel Cabrera.
"Detroit’s Biggest Party" will start early with a free tailgate from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Grand Circus Park, where fans can enjoy beer, food trucks, photo opportunities, giveaways and a live stream of the Tigers game.
The gates to Comerica open at 10:30 a.m. All ticketed fans are encouraged to be in their seats by 12:35 p.m. for introductions of the 2024 Tigers.
