Last time the Tigers played on Sunday Night Baseball in Detroit, their leadoff hitter was Ian Kinsler and J.D. Martinez hit cleanup. They were headed for a firesale at the trade deadline, and a grueling rebuild. That was in May of 2017.
Eight years later, the primetime lights are returning to Comerica Park. The Tigers-Twins game on June 29 in Detroit has been flexed to ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball, the network announced Thursday.
The Tigers enter play Thursday with the best record in the American League at 44-25, seven games up on the Twins in the AL Central. They have the best record in the majors since Aug. 11 of last season. The Twins have the best record in the majors since May 3 of this season, fueled by a 13-game winning streak last month.
It will be the second series of the season between Detroit and Minnesota.
The Tigers made their return to Sunday Night Baseball last August when they beat the Yankees in the Little League Classic in Williamsport, early in their 31-13 run that propelled them to the playoffs.
Now, the grand stage is returning to Comerica Park.
