Seven years ago, Anthony Gose arrived in Detroit as the Tigers' centerfielder of the future. Later this summer he'll take the mound for Team USA in the Tokyo Olympics.
Gose, who switched positions in his final season in the Tigers organization, was announced on Friday as one of the 12 pitchers who made Team USA's 24-man roster for the Olympics.
Former Tigers pitcher Edwin Jackson also made the squad.
The Tigers acquired Gose from the Blue Jays at the end of the 2014 season, a few months after sending Austin Jackson to the Mariners in the David Price trade. Gose, 23 at the time, would be Detroit's starting center fielder in 2015 and at the start of 2016.
But offensive struggles sent him to the minors, and Gose never returned. He switched to pitching in 2017 in an attempt to salvage his career -- he did throw in the upper 90's -- and logged a 7.59 ERA in 11 games for Detroit's High-A affiliate. The club granted him free agency after the season.
Now 30, Gose is still pitching. He's made it to Triple-A with the Indians where he has a 5.82 ERA and 24 strikeouts in 17 innings this season out of the bullpen. Maybe soon he'll be pitching against the Tigers.
For now we'll be cheering him on in Tokyo.
