Kitchen finger injury will sideline Torkelson for start of spring training

Spencer Torkelson was all set to play in the Tigers' first few games of spring training, beginning Sunday against the Phillies. Playing third, possibly hitting third.

Then he suffered an injury ... in the kitchen.

A.J. Hinch said Thursday morning that the Tigers' top prospect cut his right index finger while trying to open a can of food Wednesday night at the house he's sharing in Lakeland with fellow prospects Riley Greene and Jake Rogers.

The cut required a couple stitches and will keep Torkelson from hitting and throwing for the next few days.

"I'm glad he wasn't at a restaurant," Hinch said with a laugh. "If he was at a restaurant we'd have a problem with that with the protocols. But he was following the rules. Maybe part of his development is going to be opening a can, I don't know."

While he waits for the cut to heal, Torkelson can still do some fielding work, which is how Hinch caught up with him Thursday morning.

"He wasn't concerned, which made me not concerned," said Hinch. "There's just some at-bats early on that he's going to miss. Once it heals we'll get him in there."

The first overall pick in the 2020 draft, Torkelson is the No. 3 prospect in baseball, according to MLB Pipeline.
