Last year, Miguel Cabrera hinted at staying with the Tigers in a coaching role upon the conclusion on his playing days. Now it's coming to fruition.

The Tigers announced Friday that Cabrera, who's entering the final series of his Hall of Fame career this weekend, will transition into the role of special assistant to president of baseball operations Scott Harris. It sounds like his role will include mentoring players around the organization.

"Lessons like how to deal with praise and pressure are exactly what we want Miguel teaching players throughout our organization. I'm honored to have him as part of our staff, and know he will continue to make the Tigers better in this role," said Harris.

Cabrera, 40, has been with the Tigers since 2006. He has said his only regret in Detroit is failing to win a World Series, though maybe he can fill that void in his new role. He said last April, in a Spanish-language interview translated by MLive, "that if he couldn't do it as a player, "I hope I can achieve that ... as an assistant, a coach, whatever."

"I would like to spend more time with this team that has such a bright future. I know that my career is going to end at some point, but I’d like to be involved with the team, a team that has given me a lot. I’d like to share with them if that is God’s will," Cabrera said.
