The Tigers are shaking up their roster entering the second half.
Prior to Friday's double-header against the Twins, the club designated for assignment Nomar Mazara and demoted infielder Willi Castro to Triple-A Toledo.
In turn, Derek Hill and Isaac Paredes are coming to Detroit.
It was a disappointing first half for Mazara, who signed a one-year, $1.75 million deal with the Tigers in the offseason. He suffered an abdominal injury early in the year and never got going when he returned, hitting just .212 with three homers in 50 games. His fate remains to be seen on waivers.
Castro's first half wasn't much better. After building a Rookie of the Year case in 2020, he hit .214 with a .619 OPS in 74 games and lost the starting job at shortstop due to struggles in the field. He'll try to get himself back on track in Toledo.
Hill returns to Detroit after shining in centerfield earlier this season. He injured his shoulder in June when he crashed into the wall making a highlight-reel catch. With or without offense, he can give the Tigers a boost with his glove.
For Paredes, it's his third stint in the majors and his second this season. The Tigers continue to have high hopes for his bat despite his early struggles in the bigs. He's still just 22 years old.
