The Tigers dropped Sunday’s rubber match with the Rays in a three-game series at Comerica Park 10-6, despite a late home run from Kerry Carpenter making things interesting.
Detroit dug an early hole, as Matt Manning allowed six runs in the first four innings on nine hits.
The Tigers slowly chipped away at the lead, with Carpenter’s two-run shot -- his first homer since July 15 -- pulling them within 8-6 in the seventh inning.
But Tampa got those two back quickly, as Wander Franco hit a two-run shot of his own the following half inning.
Detroit opens a four-game set with the first-place Minnesota Twins on Monday.
