The day has come. Miguel Cabrera’s time in a Detroit Tigers uniform is coming to an end.
All season Major League teams honored the future Hall-of-Famer with retirement gifts. On Saturday, it was the Tigers’ turn, as the club unveiled a No. 24 made out of 3,000 baseballs in right-center field, gave him an autographed Comerica Park seat, custom cleats and a $24,000 donation to the Miguel Cabrera Foundation.
On Sunday, it was the fans’ turn.
Ahead of his last game at Comerica Park, the Tigers played a special video tribute narrated by actor and Detroit-area native J.K. Simmons. That was followed by a stunning display in the stands as fans held up orange, blue and white cards.
The scene spelled out “Gracias, Miggy” along the lower level seats, while the upper deck read “500-24-3000.”
Shortly after the goosebumps died down, Cabrera’s children introduced him for the first at-bat in the final game of his career.
