Rick Porcello spent the first six years of his career with the Tigers. Could he return for year 13?
The Tigers, who are searching for another starting pitcher on the free agent market, have reached out to Porcello about a potential reunion, according to MLB.com.
A deal doesn't appear imminent; the two parties 'remain apart on contract terms.'
Porcello, 32, would add an innings eater and a veteran leader to the Tigers' young rotation. He made at least 30 starts four years in a row prior to the 2020 shortened season and he ranks fifth in the majors in innings pitched since 2014.
Right now, the Tigers' rotation includes Matthew Boyd, Spencer Turnbull, Michael Fulmer and free agent acquisition Jose Urena. Casey Mize and Tarik Skubal are vying for spots as well.
The club is toying with the idea of a six-man rotation, and GM Al Avila said Monday, "Definitely looking for more pitching as we speak. Pitching in general, but at least one more starter would be ideal."
Porcello struggled in 2020, going 1-7 with a career-high 5.64 ERA over 12 starts after signing a one-year, $10 million deal with the Mets.
