DMX remains in ‘vegetative state’ after weekend heart attack and overdose

Following his drug overdose and heart attack, DMX’s family is speaking out about the rapper’s condition after he was hospitalized and fell into a coma over the weekend.

In the issued statement, DMX’s family is asking for prayers as the rapper is in a “vegetative state.” Also notifying the public about a prayer vigil which will take place on Monday April 5, outside the New York hospital where DMX remains on life support.

"On Friday night, April 2nd, 2021, our brother, son, father, and colleague DMX, birth name of Earl Simmons, was admitted to White Plains (NY) Hospital, facing serious health issues," the family said through a publicist. "We ask that you please keep Earl/DMX and us in your thoughts, wishes, and prayers as well as respect our privacy as we face these challenges.”

In a follow up statement released Sunday afternoon, the family further revealed that the rapper remained in a coma and was on a ventilator.

As soon as the saddening news broke, it began an outpouring of support and prayers for the famed artist. With fans and famous friends, from LL Cool J, Ja Rule, Rick Ross and more, all taking to to social media to share their hopes and well wishes.

In a statement made to the New York Times, DMX’s lawyer, Murray Richman, spoke about the rapper and his “difficult life” and use of music as an outlet.

“He expressed the pain and suffering in a very unique way,” Richman said. “He truly is reflective of a whole segment of our society whose pain and suffering go unrecorded.”

Richman added, “He is truly an amazing person. He walked into a room, he lit up the room. He couldn’t help making you feel good in his presence.”
