Tua Tagovailoa placed in concussion protocol again ahead of Dolphins' game vs. Patriots

Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is back in the concussion protocol and his status for this week's game against the New England Patriots is in doubt, head coach Mike McDaniel revealed on Monday.

McDaniel was unsure when Tagovailoa sustained the concussion but met with doctors on Monday who determined he had symptoms of a concussion.

The Dolphins quarterback had previously missed two games earlier this season after sustaining a concussion against the Cincinnati Bengals when he had to be carted off the field.

Tagovailoa and the Dolphins were at the center of controversy at the time because many fans thought he had sustained a concussion the week prior when it appeared he was woozy after a hit but returned to game and said afterward it was actually a back injury.

The latest concussion comes at a critical time in the Dolphins' season in which they are fighting for a playoff spot. The Patriots, Miami's Week 17 opponent, are one of the teams vying for one of the final wild-card spots as well.

Teddy Bridgewater will likely get the start for the Dolphins. Bridgewater replaced Tagovailoa earlier this year and started two games in his place, although left one of them early because he was injured.

The Dolphins lost all three games without Tagovailoa, although Bridgewater threw for 329 yards and two touchdowns (and two interceptions) in his Week 6 start against the Vikings.
