Drew Brees to wear custom-made cleats of baseball legends for Saints-Bears playoff game

As Drew Brees steps onto the field for Sunday’s Wild Card game against the Chicago Bears, the New Orleans Saints quarterback will be recognizing some of his favorite baseball players.

The 41-year-old plans to wear custom-made black and gold cleats that will consist of baseball Hall of Famers Ted Williams, Ken Griffey Jr., Satchel Paige and Nolan Ryan.

Brees has long acknowledged his fandom for Williams, even though he played before the quarterback’s time, and wears No. 9 because it was the number the Splendid Splinter wore during his career with the Boston Red Sox.

Brees, a native of Dallas, Texas, also grew up admiring Ryan on the pitching side and has even worked with the former Texas Rangers pitching coach, Tom House, to help with his throwing motion as he did with Ryan – who pitched until he was 47.

The Saints quarterback has channeled Paige in the past as well, quoting the Negro Leagues legend when Brees turned 37 years old.

As for Griffey, well, who doesn’t like Ken Griffey Jr.?
