When it comes to the Tom Brady vs. Bill Belichick debate about the Patriots dynasty, it was always a no-brainer for at least one famous New England fan.

Actor Matt Damon, who recently appeared on “The Bill Simmons Podcast,” acknowledged that he is sticking by Brady’s side to the end. So much so, that he watched every Buccaneers game in 2020.

“It’s not even bandwagon. I love Tom,” Damon said (h/t Boston.com). “He’s a once-in-a-lifetime athlete for all of us who were lucky enough to be able to follow. His entire career, I’m riding it all the way to the end.

“I don’t, you know, the Patriots, I don’t know. I’m following Tommy. The fact he did that last yer on a torn MCL, just stop it. You know what I mean? It’s just awesome. It’s such a great story.”

Damon, a Cambridge native, has gotten to know Brady over the years and when he left town for Tampa he knew he had to stick with him.

“I was always a believer,” Damon said of Brady. “Everyone does the ‘Was it Belichick or was it Brady?’ Belichick’s an amazing coach, but I never doubted that it wasn’t Brady. … He’s on the field playing the game.”

While Damon will likely be rooting for Brady and the Bucs again in 2021, he still says he still roots for the Patriots and complimented quarterbacks Cam Newton and first-round pick Mac Jones.

But Damon also believes that there did not need to be a divorce between Brady and the franchise.

“They could’ve kept him,” he said. “I don’t begrudge that guy. I want him to go win another Super Bowl. It’s just such an awesome story.”
