The home of Pittsburgh Penguins center Evgeni Malkin was burglarized over the weekend.
The Athletic's Rob Rossi says Malkin's Stanley Cup rings were stolen
A string of burglaries at the homes of professional athletes has hit the NHL with Pittsburgh Penguins superstar Evgeni Malkin becoming the latest reported victim.
The team confirmed the robbery but declined to get into details. Rob Rossi, Senior writer for the Penguins and the NHL for The Athletic, tells The Big K Morning Show, Malkin's three Stanley Cup championship rings were stolen from his Sewickley Heights home.
The alarm system and security cameras at the home were down at the time of the break-in. It’s believed it happened while the Penguins were playing the Ottawa Senators on Saturday afternoon.
The Penguins are working with local police as well as team security officials.
Malkin has requested privacy during the ongoing investigation.
While an official connection to other burglaries have not been made, it’s the latest in a string of break-ins affecting star athletes, including Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, Joe Burrow and other NFL and NBA stars.
Rossi says he spoke with Allegheny County Police. They tell him detectives are still investigating.
And, it isn’t just athletes that are being targeted. KDKA Radio’s Colin Dunlap reports that other high-profile names in the Pittsburgh area have also been targets of burglaries.
Dunlap broke the story on his show Tuesday afternoon
Law enforcement officials tell Dunlap that $1 million+ homes are targeted and over a handful have been hit over the past few months.
It’s believed to be a South American crime syndicate that is able to disable security camera and other measures are behind the burglaries.
They are also able to monitor the cameras and can strike when no one is home.
The FBI has sent a memo out, warning of the threat.
The NFL and NBA have also sent memos out to athletes on the break-ins.
No arrests or suspects have been identified.
