The shooting occurred near the intersection of Monterey Highway and Bailey Avenue around 3:14 p.m, police said. An adult male was shot at least once and transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Authorities announced on Tuesday morning that the suspect had been identified as Velasquez, 39, a two-time UFC heavyweight champion. He was booked into Santa Clara County main jail for attempted murder.

No other information was released.

"The motive and circumstances surrounding this incident are still under investigation," police tweeted.

Velasquez, who was born in Salinas, began his UFC career in 2008 and held the heavyweight title from 2010 to 2011 and 2012 to 2015. He retired from mixed martial arts in 2019 and, according to ESPN, most recently had been coaching at his longtime gym, American Kickboxing Academy, in San Jose.
