Florida Gators basketball star Keyontae Johnson is apparently conscious and breathing on his own following reports he was put in a medically induced coma after collapsing on the court during a game on Saturday.

The Florida men's basketball program on Tuesday released a statement on social media from Johnson's parents, explaining that the 21-year-old was awake and communicating with his doctors, family, and even his teammates -- via video conference call.

"Keyontae is in stable condition today, breathing on his own and speaking with us and his doctors here at UF Health," the statement said. "He even FaceTimed with the team!"

Johnson, a junior small forward who hails from Virginia, collapsed face-first at mid-court during the game against rival Florida State, moments after throwing down an emphatic slam dunk.

Play was suspended for several minutes while Johnson was attended by medical staff. Several of his teammates were clearly shaken up by the scary scene.

Florida was given the choice to suspend the game but chose to play on, ultimately losing after enjoying a lead prior to the medical emergency.

On Monday, Johnson's grandfather revealed to USA Today that his grandson had been placed into a coma, and that his outlook was unclear.

Johnson, the SEC preseason player of the year, was among several Florida players who tested positive for coronavirus during the summer. It was uncertain if his collapse was related to the virus.

Johnson, listed at 6-foot-5 and 230 pounds, was off to a fast start in his first four games, averaging 16 points in 20 minutes.
