A former Minnesota high school and college hockey standout is dead after an on-ice collision during a game played in England.
29-year-old Adam Johnson was playing for the Nottingham Panthers in Sheffield when his throat was slashed during an on-ice collision.
A video from the game shows Johnson getting up from the ice and leaving a trail of blood as he's led away.
Officials from the Nottingham team are calling it a "freak accident."
Johnson played prep hockey at Hibbing and two years at Minnesota-Duluth.
He was drafted by the National Hockey League's Pittsburgh Penguins and began playing in Europe in 2002.
Johnson played 13 games for the Penguins over two seasons, scoring one goal and adding three assists.
In four seasons playing for the Hibbing Bluejackets, Johnson scored 82 goals and helped the team to a berth in the 2011 state tournament.
Johnson also played junior hockey before playing at UMD, playing on the Bulldogs team that made it to the 2017 national championship game, losing to Denver in Chicago.
