Report: Former Patriots WR David Patten dead at age 47

Former Patriots wide receiver David Patten has passed away at age 47.

According to The State in South Carolina (his hometown paper), Patten died on Thursday.

Sam Gordon, who runs G2 Management where Patten is one of the clients, confirmed to the paper Friday morning that Patten has died.

Gordon could not share any details on his death.

Patten was one of the more under-appreciated players on the Patriots in the early 2000s. He caught the first postseason touchdown pass of Tom Brady's career and was one of the biggest reasons why the Patriots were able to win Super Bowl XXXVI.

The wide out was extremely clutch. During the 2001 playoffs in the Snow Bowl he had eight catches for 107 yards, a touchdown catch in the AFC title game against the Steelers and then another in the Super Bowl against the Rams.

Patten was with the Patriots from 2001-04 and then spent time with Washington, New Orleans and Cleveland before re-signing with the Patriots in 2010 and retiring.
