CLEVELAND, Ohio (92.3 The Fan) - Veteran relief pitcher Andrew Miller is retiring after 16 major league seasons.

Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch first reported the two-time All-Star's retirement and included a text message from Miller:

Miller was the sixth overall draft selection by the Detroit Tigers in 2006 before being part of a mega-trade between the Tigers and the Florida Marlins that sent Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis to Detroit. After three injured-plagued seasons in South Florida, Miller joined the Boston Red Sox in 2011 and would transition from a starting pitcher to a reliever, eventually winning the 2013 World Series with Boston.

Miller played for seven teams over the course of his pro career, including the Cleveland Indians, who traded for the 6-foot-7 left-hander from the New York Yankees during the 2016 season. Miller, who went 4-0 with a 1.55 earned run average over 29 relief innings for Cleveland that year, was named the ALCS MVP (0.00 ERA, 14 strikeouts in 7.2 IP) as the team earned its first AL pennant in nearly two decades. Miller spent the next two seasons in Cleveland, earning his second consecutive All-Star appearance in 2017.

A member of the MLB Players Association's executive board, Miller was also one of the most prominent voices representing the league players during his career, including in negotiations for the past offseason's MLB lockout.

Miller retires with a 55-55 record and a 4.03 ERA.
