4 moves we would like to see during MLB Winter Meetings
The 2020 MLB Winter Meetings will have a strange feeling.
First of all, there are no physical meetings because of COVID-19, so it's difficult to know whether the hot stove will heat up to the same degree this year. Without as many in-person interactions - and perhaps as many drinks being served at the hotel bar - there may not be as much traction on free-agent and trade negotiations this week as we're accustomed to.
One of the other uncertainties that hangs over this year's MLB Winter Meetings is that we don't know if the DH will return to the National League in 2021. MLB Insider Ken Rosenthal reported that MLB and MLBPA were scheduled to talk about the future of the rule in the senior circuit at some point in December. Perhaps that will come this week. In the meantime, National League teams find themselves at a disadvantage as they prepare for the 2021 season, and the free-agent markets of Nelson Cruz, Marcell Ozuna and Kyle Schwarber are in limbo.
If you're looking for one guarantee this week, it's apparently that the Philadelphia Phillies won't trade righty Zack Wheeler, even if they're offered Babe Ruth. Phillies' managing partner John Middleton was adamant in a discussion with ESPN's Buster Olney that the Phillies do not plan to trade Wheeler, who is entering the second year of a five-year/$118 million deal. Earlier in the day, Olney had reported that teams around the league had been made aware by the Phillies that they were willing to listen to offers for Wheeler. Middleton told Olney that he was being lied to by the multiple league sources cited in his initial report.
So, that's one star off the board, and the guess here is that you won't see free-agent decisions from J.T. Realmuto and Trevor Bauer, among other available stars, this week. Still, here are five transactions that we'd like to see happen during this year's MLB Winter Meetings:
