Yes, you read that correctly. Farhan Zaidi is out as the Giants' president of baseball operations. And yes, you read that second part correctly, too. Buster Posey is replacing him.

That news comes courtesy of multiple reports, with the San Francisco Chronicle's Susan Slusser the first to report the "parting of the ways" with Zaidi.

Giants chairman Greg Johnson said the following in a statement:

“We are looking for someone who can define, direct and and lead this franchise's baseball philosophy and we feel that Buster is the perfect fit. Buster has the demeanor, intelligence and drive to do this job, and we are confident that he and Bob Melvin will work together to bring back winning baseball to San Francisco.”

Zaidi's six-year tenure with the team began in 2018 when he came over from the Los Angeles Dodgers. A sterling, resurgent 2021 campaign after the COVID-19 2020 season and Bruce Bochy's final campaign in 2019 bought Zaidi (the Executive of the Year in 2021) and the front office a bit of goodwill, which was quickly burned through.

This team has been astoundingly mediocre in the last three seasons, going 240-246 and finishing no higher than third in the NL West.

That aimless sentiment pervaded over everything from the Giants, and it doomed Zaidi. Now, Posey, a consecrated figure in Giants lore, and a human hearkening back to the three-title era in the first half of the 2010s, takes over. At minimum, he provides a face that reminds fans of the last time this team was a serious contender. We shall soon see how he evaluates talent.
