After dropping another series, the Mets have lost four of their last five games, and still sit 8.5 games back of a playoff spot with the trade deadline just two weeks away.
Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander could be moved if they waive their no-trade clauses and agree to go to a contender, and Gio says if they are willing, the Mets should absolutely pull the trigger.
“I am all for trading these guys. I am all for it,” Gio said. “Whats the alternative? You hang onto them and hope you somehow turn the season around in August and September…and come back next year and repeat what you did this year? Build a team that is so top-heavy with these pitchers that aren’t getting any younger?”
Steve Cohen told reporters at his impromptu press conference earlier this month that he wouldn’t be buying at the deadline if the Mets’ playoff outlook didn’t improve, and so far, it hasn’t. He also said he would be willing to eat salary if it meant beefing up the farm system, and Gio says that’s the exact route New York should take at the deadline.
“I would trade them. I would find that desperate team,” Gio said. “They talk about replenishing the farm system, if that means having to pay a lot of the salary, you pay the salary to get the prospects. I know that’s waving the white flag and that stinks, but it didn’t work.”
