Jacob deGrom hops fence, runs away from reporters after throwing on field

If you throw it, they will come.

That's the case for Mets star Jacob deGrom, who has been out of action since his start on July 7 and continues to recover from right elbow inflammation. He was given a 0.01 percent chance of returning by one report a couple of weeks ago, but that minuscule fraction of hope is alive and well seeing as he began his throwing program. According to MLB.com's Anthony DiComo, deGrom had been tossing at 75 feet prior to Sunday, when he moved back to 100-plus feet for the first time.

Naturally, seeing deGrom do so is going to create some buzz, but he didn't let any reporters in on where he's at and escaped the questions. No, literally, he escaped.

Is that surprising behavior from deGrom? Considering he answered a question regarding where he's at in his recovery with, "I'm in Washington," perhaps we should have expected the All-Star to do all that he could do in order to avoid any other questions.

Should his throwing program go well, DiComo says that he could foreseeably take the field in a game in late September, though there's still a long way to go before that happens. And even if it does happen, DiComo says that team officials aren't expecting much more than one or two abbreviated appearances down the stretch unless the Mets sneak into the playoffs. At 68-68, the Mets have a 6.4 percent chance of making the postseason based on Baseball Reference's Playoff Odds, so the math tells us that we shouldn't get all too excited about deGrom's outlook for the remainder of this season.

But as long as he's throwing and there's a slight glimmer of hope, we're willing to stay positive. Just don't expect deGrom to give us too much detail — or even allow questions to be asked.
