(670 The Score) MLB insider Jon Morosi of MLB Network and Fox Sports expects White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf to conduct a real search for the organization's next lead baseball executive.
Morosi shared that belief on the Parkins & Spiegel Show on Thursday afternoon amid growing speculation that the White Sox will promote interanlly by elevating assistant general manager/player development Chris Getz to be their new general manager.
“When you have as dramatic of a change as they have had, which is to let go of two guys who have been with this organization for decades, I don’t think that you necessarily immediately make the hire and the decision to hire from within without first going through steps externally,” Morosi said. “That’s my sense of the situation right now. I think if they knew for certain that it was going to be Getz – and I’ll clarify by saying it may ultimately be Chris at some point – but I don’t think they know that for certain at this moment. I don’t think they’re in a position where they can make that determination at a moment’s notice right now in the same week (as the firings). There are some steps to go through. There are candidates to consider. I think it would be a little hasty of them to promote from within right away when you’ve got someone who built a World Series champion last year in James Click.”
Blue Jays vice president of baseball strategy James Click, who was the Astros’ general manager from 2020-‘22, and Phillies director of player development Preston Mattingly are two others who are on the White Sox’s radar in addition to Getz, Morosi reported earlier Thursday.
Morosi expects the White Sox to interview five or six finalists for the lead executive job before making and announcing their decision.
“Yes, they have to,” Morosi responded when asked if the White Sox will interview a bunch of candidates.
“They’ve got some people to talk to before that make an ultimate decision. And it might be Getz, but I don’t think they’re there yet.”
