Twins shortstop Kyle Farmer was forced to exit Wednesday’s game against the Chicago White Sox after he was hit in the face by a Lucas Giolito 92 mph fastball.
The Twins are calling Farmer’s diagnosis a jaw injury after Giolito ran his fastball inside and put Farmer in the dirt.
The team’s medical staff was quick to the batter’s box to care for Farmer, who has been a pleasant surprise on the team’s roster this season, starting seven of the club’s first 12 games.
Farmer was able to get to his feet and make his way to the team’s dugout with the help of the trainers around him as he pressed a towel to his face.
The hit did not appear to be intentional, as after the ball was thrown, Giolito raised his hands to his head and looked concerned from the mound. The pitch came in the fourth inning of a scoreless game with runners at the corners.
The Twins went on to beat the White Sox 3-1, taking the first series against the Chicago ball club this season.
No further information about Farmer’s injury has been made available at this time.
