DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - The Rangers were certainly on a high after the top of the first inning in their opening day game vs the Kansas City Royals on Thursday afternoon. At least, they were until the bottom of the first began.

Texas sent 10 hitters to the plate in the first, scoring five runs on seven hits. The Royals followed that up with a five-run inning of their own, and in the process of putting up those runs, they knocked Rangers opening day starter, Kyle Gibson, out of the game after just 1/3 innings of work.

Gibson allowed five runs on four hits and three walks, and unfortunately for him, that stat line put him in some rare company.

According to Baseball-Reference, via Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News, it was the shortest start for an opening day starter since 1982 when Blue Jays starter Mark Bomback got one Milwaukee Brewers hitter out.

Gibson was named the club's opening day starter by manager Chris Woodward during spring training. It was the first time he got the ball on opening day in his nine-year career.
