Loomis: 'Sky isn't falling' at 2-2, but Saints 'still have to act like it is'

The New Orleans Saints are well aware of the situation they've landed themselves in after back-to-back losses to drop to 2-2 in disappointing fashion.

That doesn't mean panic or drastic changes, as GM Mickey Loomis explained on WWL this week, but that doesn't mean the current state of affairs can continue without serious scrutiny and adjustments.

"We didn’t play well [against the Bucs]. I didn’t think we played well on either side of the ball and we made some mistakes you just can’t make and expect to be a good football team," Loomis told Mike Hoss. "So we’ve got to get that corrected. I agree, the sky is not falling, and yet we also have to act like it is falling to some degree and have a sense of urgency about improving in attention to details and otherwise we’re going to find ourselves in the same boat week after week.”

The messaging is consistent with what we've heard from head coach Dennis Allen since the disappointing, 26-9 loss to a division rival. The Saints offense hasn't gotten into the end zone in seven quarters and hasn't scored more than 20 points in a game since Week 7 of the 2022 season.

Adjustments need to be made, but the team doesn't see coaching changes as the answer to those woes.

“I think the message is, look, we’ve got to understand, we’ve got to be realistic about what we’re doing that is not allowing us to win. We’ve got to be realistic about it, and we’ve got to go about making corrections," Loomis said. "I think we all believe we have a good football team, but yet we’re not playing well. We’ve done some really good things, even within these games. But we’ve got to put that all together, and that comes from preparation during the week, and then being ready and taking advantage of the circumstances and your opportunities on the weekend. So I don’t think there’s panic, and yet we need to have urgency.”

The first chance to get things moving in the right direction will come in New England against a Patriots squad that has also underwhelmed offensively during a 1-3 start. Part of those struggles are due to the matchups, facing conference powers in the Bills, Eagles and Cowboys. Their win came against the Jets, a team that lost QB Aaron Rodgers to injury just four plays into the season.

"It’s not any one player or position group or one thing," Loomis said. "It’s been just a culmination of some other things. We understand that, but it gets back to, 'hey, do your job. Do just your job and do it well and then everything will come together,' and so I think that’s the message more than anything else. Let’s each of us do our job to the best of our ability and the end result will be what we desire.”
