Patricia isn't the first interesting name new Broncos head coach Sean Payton has looked at for the position, as Rex Ryan and Vance Joseph are also reportedly top candidates.

Patricia previously spent six seasons as the Patriots' defensive coordinator from 2012-17, helping them win two Super Bowls during that time.

Things haven't gone as well for Patricia since then. He took the Detroit Lions' head coaching job in 2018, but lasted just three seasons after going 13-29-1. Bill Belichick brought him back to New England after that, naming him senior football advisor for the 2021 season.

This past season, Belichick elected to make Patricia his offensive line coach and de facto offensive coordinator, but the experiment failed miserably, with the Patriots offense and quarterback Mac Jones taking major steps back.

The Patriots have already moved in a different direction on offense, hiring Bill O'Brien as their new offensive coordinator. It had been unclear if Patricia would remain in the organization in another role, but Rapoport's report makes it clear that Patricia is at least looking at other opportunities, and on the side of the ball he knows best.
