Mets celebrate World Series win…during fielding practice?

Rejoice, Mets fans, your team's 35-year title drought is over!

Well, not quite, but the Mets celebrated as if that were the case during practice on Wednesday.


One of New York's most glaring holes from last season was its performance in the field. In fact, the team was 26th in baseball last year with a Defensive Runs Saved of -22, per FanGraphs. The Mets have been working to improve that, and decided to up the stakes in fielding practice, staging it as if it were the final out in game seven of the World Series.

So, when a catch was made out in right field, the team threw their gloves in the air in celebration, and partied like it was 1986.

We'll see if the team's new practice method manifests into an improved defense and an actual World Series win in 2021, but here's why the team practiced it on Wednesday, from skipper Luis Rojas:
