DETROIT (WWJ) -- Charges against a former Michigan State basketball star will not be filed Wednesday in connection with a murder in Detroit last weekend, but charges could still come soon.

Keith Appling, the 29-year-old former Spartan, is accused of fatally shooting a 66-year-old man on Saturday night on Detroit’s west side.

The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office tells WWJ they are still reviewing the warrant request, but charges will not be filed on Wednesday.

Appling was arrested Monday in Chelsea, Michigan, following a manhunt.

Police say Appling and the victim had gotten into an argument and then a fight around 7 p.m. Saturday at a home on Whitcomb, in the area of Greenfield Road and Schoolcraft, before it escalated to gun violence.

Appling allegedly fired multiple shots before fleeing the scene in a Buick Regal.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Detroit Pershing graduate played for four years at MSU from 2010 to 2014, the team’s leading scorer heading into his junior season. After graduation, he signed two short-lived contracts with the Orlando Magic.

He spent 18 months on probation for drug charges in 2020, and about two years earlier, was sentenced to a year in jail for carrying concealed weapons and resisting arrest.
