About 100 days from the start of the college football season, Vegas has released win totals for each team. And Draft Kings has Michigan State at 4.5 -- which Mike Valenti says is "so depressing to look at."
"The idea that MSU has fallen to that point, Jesus Mary, 4.5? That's hot seat (for Mel Tucker). That is square on the hot seat. I think part of it is a recency bias to losing the quarterback and the wideout, but I look at that and I go, 'Wow, what are we back to, the mid 2000's here? John Five-L Smith?' What are we doing?"
After the transfer departures of QB Payton Thorne and WR Keon Coleman, Valenti says the Spartans will be lucky to win seven games in Tucker's fourth season as head coach. He has a record of 18-14 thus far at MSU, to which Valenti says, "How many games does Tuck have to win for him not to be on the hot seat?"
"I would say seven or eight, depending on what you do with the Michigan game," says Rico. "If you want to be real about it."
"Here's the bottom line," says Valenti. "The lowest win total in the conference is Northwestern at 3.5, Indiana's at 4. Rutgers is at 4.5 and Michigan State's at 4.5. I don't want to hear about the quarterback, I don't want to hear about the running back. If the state of this program is that you are operating something that is going to be in or around 5 wins, come on."
"I can then begin to say, 'Hey, all of the criticism, lob it.' I mean, 4.5 in Vegas? I can't believe that's the state of the program."
