Andrew Miller still gets chills thinking about David Ortiz's iconic speech: 'It should be taught in school'

It has been ten years since the Boston Marathon bombings and ten years since David Ortiz's moving speech upon the Red Sox' return to Fenway Park.

Journeyman pitcher Andrew Miller was starting his third season in Boston in 2013 and saw firsthand the effect that Ortiz and the rest of the Red Sox had on the city in a time of mourning and healing.

Miller joined WEEI's Rob Bradford on the Audacy Original Podcast "Baseball Isn't Boring" and looked back on Ortiz's speech that reminded Boston just how strong it is.

"We as a team were able to give moments to help a city – whether it's distract them or heal them or whatever," Miller said (2:22 in player above). "In a city like this that's so in love with their baseball team, the fact that these guys are able to go out and win a World Series in the same year and kind of have something else to smile about after the tragedy is pretty neat.

"I think when you talk about that you can't bring that up without talking about David's speech on the field."

"It's mind-blowing," Miller continued. "It should be taught in school. This is how you go up and speak in public. It gives me chills thinking about it."

Ortiz is a Red Sox legend and helped give Boston something to rally around from April all the way through to the World Series in late October.

Ten years later, it's important to look back and remember the lives that were lost and affected that day while also remembering how the city of Boston responded in a time of crisis.
