The 3M Open is underway at TPC Twin Cities in Blaine, and one of the competitors has Minnesota ties and a very special caddy helping him fight for the top spot this weekend.
23-year-old Frankie Capan grew up in North Oaks, where he dreamed of playing in the 3M Open one day.
Now, as a young man, that dream has become a reality, and his mother, Charlynn, will be cheering him on a little closer than most moms can.
The reason is that Charlynn Capan is his caddy.
While at first, it was just temporary, she’s now been put “on the bag” permanently, handing out clubs and giving advice to the young golfer.
“It’s been pretty special for us,” Frankie Capan said.
While Frankie and Charlynn are both hyper-competitive at what they do, that can sometimes lead to tension.
“The one thing that’s important for us is once we leave the course, we try to turn it off cause things can… get a little tense out there,” Frankie Capan said.
Still, even though he says they stay in different locations on tour to give each other space, their relationship has only been strengthened by their teamwork.
“There are some days if we have a tough day we want our space a little bit, but if anything, I only see our mother-son relationship getting deeper and better as the times gone on,” Frankie Capan said.
