MLB is set to institute a host of rule changes for the 2023 season.
Before pitchers and catchers are set to report this week, MLB VP of on-field strategy Joe Martinez met with reporters in Arizona on Tuesday to give a first-hand look at baseball’s new wrinkles.

John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle shared some of the highlights from Martinez’s visit, as he explained how the pitch clock will be communicated to pitchers, the banning of the infield shift and most notably, the new bases.
MLB will feature 18-square-inch bases, up from the traditional 15-square-inch bases of past years. According to Martinez, the distance between home plate and first base will still be 90 feet, but it will be 4.5 inches shorter between first and second, and second and third.
