Packers president Mark Murphy spoke with WBAY in Green Bay on Friday, and seemed to make it very clear that the franchise is ready to move onto a new chapter that doesn't include Aaron Rodgers.
Murphy confirmed that the team gave the Jets permission to speak with Rodgers, which they did on Tuesday in California, and hopes to have the situation resolved by the start of free agency, which is March 15 on the NFL calendar.
"It's a situation where I think we wanted to help Aaron achieve what he wanted, as well as the Packers," Murphy told WBAY. "Hopefully it'll create a situation where it's a win for both sides…We are really hopeful we can find a resolution that works for Aaron and works for us.
"It's about finding what he wants, and what we want. Hopefully it can be a win-win."
As for what the Packers want, Murphy seemed to leave little doubt that the Rodgers era is over, especially when asked if he could see a scenario where the future Hall of Famer is back as their starting quarterback next season.
"Yeah, I mean, unless, if things don't work out the way that we would want them," Murphy said. "Yeah, he is obviously a great player."
Murphy's comments are sure to ignite even more hope and excitement among Jets fans clamoring to add the veteran quarterback. That excitement has been hovering over New York since the end of the season, and especially since Rodgers met with the Jets this week, which Gang Green reportedly left with optimism that it was on the cusp of making a deal to bring Rodgers to New York.
As for the Packers, Murphy seemed to also make it clear that the franchise is ready to hand the keys over to Jordan Love.
"Yeah, we have a lot of confidence in him," Murphy said. "We drafted him and developed him. A lot of credit goes to our coaches and to Jordan. We do think he is ready."
