Back in 2018, a German man diagnosed with ALS voluntarily elected to have a brain chip implanted in his brain to aid with his communication capabilities. At the time, he could still communicate through eye movement.
Now, the 36-year-old man is completely paralyzed, and has the chip implanted, allowing him to communicate once more which before would've been impossible. And his first words? "I want a beer."
The man also requested a head massage from his mom, curry and soup to be fed to him through tubes, and music from the rock band Tool to be played "loud."
Doctors at the Wyss Center in Geneva say this is the first instance of someone with no voluntary muscle movement being able to communicate.
According to TMZ, the chip allows him to signal "yes" or "no" to a series of letters and spell out commands at a rate of one character per minute, which allowed him to order his drink in about ten minutes.
Worth it!
