6 rings: One thing that has caused the Patriots offense some major headaches in Training Camp
The Patriots are bringing back one of their own.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, New England is signing defensive end Trey Flowers. The 2015 fourth-round pick spent his first four NFL seasons with the Patriots, winning two Super Bowls with the club before signing a five-year, $90 million contract with the Detroit Lions in 2019.
New England had Flowers in for a free agent visit earlier this offseason and worked him out again on Monday. The team was clearly impressed, and put pen to paper on Tuesday.
Throughout his eight-year career, Flowers has tallied 265 total tackles, 31.5 sacks, 10 forced fumbles, and four fumble recoveries, and is a member of New England’s All-2010’s decade team. However, it’s not his stats or accolades that he’s remembered for.
During the Patriots’ comeback from down 28-3 in Super Bowl LI, Flowers sacked Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan with under four minutes left, taking Atlanta out of field goal range and allowing New England to tie the game on the following drive on their way to the largest comeback in Super Bowl history.
Whie former Arkansas Razorback is just 29 years old and should still have something left in the tank, he’ll have his work cut out for him to make this Patriots squad with a loaded LB/DE room in front of him.
